Jim Oberweis calls on Rep. Lauren Underwood to support dental care for veterans

Sugar Grove, IL – Jim Oberweis is calling on Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-14) to support America’s veterans by co-sponsoring legislation aimed at providing dental care for veterans.

H.R. 96 would require the Veterans Administration to treat dental care like any other medical specialty. So far, there are 62 co-sponsors of the legislation. Lauren Underwood, who sits on the Veterans Affairs Committee, has not agreed to co-sponsor the bill.

“Sometimes it seems like the only people Underwood wants to help are illegal immigrants,” Oberweis said. “Anyone who has a plan to provide taxpayer benefits to illegal immigrants, Underwood is right there lending her support, but when it comes to helping our nation’s veterans she is nowhere to be found.”

Former Congressman Randy Hultgren supported previous versions of the dental care for veterans legislation. Oberweis said he also supports providing dental benefits to veterans, and he will be filing a joint resolution of support in the Illinois Senate similar to House Joint Resolution 84, which has been bottled up in the House Rules Committee.

“Dental care is important to people’s overall health and it makes sense to provide dental benefits to our veterans,” Oberweis said. “We have an obligation to take care of the health needs of our veterans and fulfilling that obligation is a top priority for me.”
