Oberweis: McHenry County officials and candidates sponsor Flag Day event to distribute care packages at Wonder Lake food pantry

For Immediate Release
June 8, 2020

Sugar Grove, IL – In observance of FLAG DAY, local McHenry County Elected Officials and candidates will distribute “Pop-Up Breakfast” Food Pantry care packages to McHenry County residents in need, according to State Senator Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove) and candidate for Congress in the 14th District.

The officials and candidates will be at the Wonder Lake Neighbors Food Pantry parking lot, 3506 E Wonder Lake Dr, Wonder Lake, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 13.

“People are hurting right now,” Oberweis said. “I have been amazed at how many people come to these events. There is a tremendous need to make sure families do not go hungry. We’re trying to do something to help.”

Sponsors will be providing bottles of fresh Oberweis Dairy milk, protective masks and breakfast food items from the Wonder Lake Neighbors Food Pantry, a partner in this event.

Food Packages are available on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. Hopefully, those most in need will be accommodated. This is a no-contact event. Cars should first line up in the upper lot and will then be brought down to the lower lot where sponsors and food bank volunteers will place the packaged food items, masks, and milk in a popped up trunk or the back seat of the car for smooth and safe delivery.

“COVID-19 has caused unexpected hardships for a lot of families in the area,” said Mike Buehler, candidate for McHenry County Board Chairman. “Our hope is that, in this small way, we can help families deal with a situation they did nothing to create.”

Oberweis has now provided milk at similar community events including Chicago, Harvey, Kane County and Kendall County. Additional contributions of supplies or donations from the public to the Wonder Lake Neighbors Food Pantry are welcome and encouraged.

Those who are contributing to bring the care packages to the county include:

· Shannon Teresi, candidate for and current McHenry County Auditor
· Glenda Miller, McHenry County Treasurer
· Don DeWitte, Illinois 33rd District State Senator
· Tom Weber, candidate for and current Illinois State Representative in the 64th District
· Jim Oberweis, Illinois 25th District State Senator and candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in the 14th District
· Mike Buehler, candidate for McHenry County Board Chairman

Members of the public are invited and encouraged to make additional contributions of supplies or donations to the Wonder Lake Neighbors Food Pantry.
